Mycobacterium chimaera Isolates from Heater–Cooler Units, United Kingdom
To the Editor: In their recent article, Svensson et al. provided results of an investigation into contamination of heater–cooler units (HCU) used in open-chest surgery with Mycobacterium chimaera in Denmark (1). We write to provide further information on the UK isolates included in their study. The authors performed whole-genome sequencing (WGS) of 5 isolates sampled from HCUs in hospitals in D...
متن کاملThe heater-cooler unit--a conceivable source of infection.
Even drinking water is contaminated with pathogenic microorganisms. This does not necessarily pose a risk for healthy individuals, but it may result in serious consequences in people with impaired immune systems. This is particularly valid if drinking water is used for medical purposes. The heater-cooler unit (HCU) connected to heat exchangers or blankets by tubing, the connection is closed wat...
متن کاملGlobal Health Estimate of Invasive Mycobacterium chimaera Infections Associated with Heater–Cooler Devices in Cardiac Surgery
Investigations of a worldwide epidemic of invasive Mycobacterium chimaera associated with heater-cooler devices in cardiac surgery have been hampered by low clinical awareness and challenging diagnoses. Using data from Switzerland, we estimated the burden of invasive M. chimaera to be 156-282 cases/year in 10 major cardiac valve replacement market countries.
متن کاملMycobacterium chimaera infections associated with heater-cooler units (HCU): closing another loophole in patient safety
In 2011, invasive cardiovascular and disseminated infections by a slowly-growing non-tuberculous mycobacterium, Mycobacterium chimaera, were detected in patients who had undergone cardiothoracic surgery in Switzerland. M. chimaera was subsequently detected in the water tanks of heater-cooler units (HCUs) used to regulate the temperature of patients’ blood in the cardiopulmonary bypass circuit, ...
متن کاملReemergence of Mycobacterium chimaera in Heater–Cooler Units despite Intensified Cleaning and Disinfection Protocol
Invasive Mycobacterium chimaera infections after open-heart surgery have been reported internationally. These devastating infections result from aerosols generated by contaminated heater-cooler units used with extracorporeal circulation during surgery. Despite intensified cleaning and disinfection, surveillance samples from factory-new units acquired during 2014 grew nontuberculous mycobacteria...
